A SPLINTER OF FINLAND IN THE ENVIRONS OF ST.-PETERSBURG

During the whole XVII century the lands of contemporary Gatchina district were constituent of a Sweden province Ingermanland (in finnish Inkeri, Inkerinmää). That period lots of Finnish peasants moved here from Finland. Their descendants got the name of ingermanland Finns at times after Peter the Great.
At period of Stalin’s repressions the ingermanlanders were exiled from their native land. Nowadays the original ingermanland culture and Finnish national self-consciousness are partly revived. The national voluntary organization "Inkeri-Seura" exists in Gatchina district where 40% of all Ingermanland Finns live. There are three Lutheran parishes in Gatchina, Kolpany and Skvoritzy, Old people’s homes in Taitzy and Tervolovo. The bilingual national newspaper "Inkeri" is published.
